Board Members Host Leadership Conference at Penn State

On Sunday, September 11, sixteen Penn State students participated in the first 367 Project Leadership Conference. Students explored hands-on exercises to demonstrate and then reflect on their leadership tendencies and capacities. According to sophomore Mike Mahon, "It was an afternoon filled with varied and unique activities that helped our members stretch the bounds of their leadership while better learning how to comport themselves in interactions with others to find the most pertinent and effectual solutions to the problems facing the contemporary world."

Activities included having the students break out into teams and take to the streets to interview people about leadership. Students also participated in the famous "Marshmallow Challenge" (explained here by Tom Wujec). At the end of the day, students reflected on the lessons learned and were inspired to incorporate the 367 Project leadership values of integrity, respect, and humility into not only their ongoing 367 Project initiatives, but also other facets of their lives.

Said Mike Kachmar, the President of the Penn State 367 Chapter, "To me, the leadership conference was an awesome experience to meet new and talented members but also to take a step back and reflect on my own leadership styles. It provided me an opportunity to identify areas in my style of leadership that may be lacking, but can be addressed and improved upon as we move forward during the semester." We were glad to see the students engaging in such rich discussion about their leadership styles and abilities, and we can't wait for the next conference!

367 Raises Money for Hatfield Playground

The 367 Project is pleased to announce, in conjunction with Hatfield Township, the School Road Park Project. The project will encompass several ventures aimed at improving the park. The 367 Project's primary undertaking is building a playground for 3-5 year olds. Additional projects will possibly be led by Eagle Scouts and include mile markers for trails, benches, and paving.

The 367 Project has pledged to raise and contribute $10,000 for the project, plus the manpower to build the playground. The other major park improvements, including the building of restrooms, retopping of park trails, and reconditioning of playing fields will hopefully be funded through a grant. Hatfield Township will be notified in September if it has received the grant, but the status of the grant will not affect our portion of the project. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2012. Although we will need volunteers, this is a fundraising-intensive project. "We are pleased to have this rich opportunity to improve the Hatfield community," says 367 Vice President Tom Markey.
